circumcision
Circumcision is the surgical removal of all or part of the foreskin tissue (prepuce) that typically covers the tip or head of the penis. During circumcision, the foreskin is freed from the head of the penis also called glans and the foreskin is surgically removed.
Infant circumcision is widely practised for religious and traditional reasons, often in the first two weeks after birth up to a year.
Health advantages
One important advantage of infant circumcision is that the procedure is simpler than that performed in older boys and men because the penis is less developed and the foreskin is thinner and less vascular. Suturing (applying stitches) is generally not required. Healing is quicker and complication rates are lower. The period of surgical wound healing after infant male circumcision is generally 5 to 7 days and most wounds heal completely within 14 days.
The procedure is performed under a local anaesthetic.
